Talking Points

  • Inland Seas Education Association (ISEA) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1989 to protect the Great Lakes through education.
  • Each year about 5,000 students participate in Schoolship, ROV, and other ISEA programs.
  • Volunteer crew and instructors are instrumental in providing programs aboard our ship and on the shore.
  • 20% of the world’s supply of surface freshwater is in the Great Lakes. ISEA plays an important role in protecting this critical resource.
  • People are passionate about the Great Lakes for a variety of reasons. We all need to protect them.
  • 50% of the world’s population will live in high water stress by 2030. Solutions to big problems always begin with education.

Share with Teachers

Schoolship programs provide classrooms a hands-on learning experience aboard a 77′ tall ship. Students learn about the health and ecology of the Great Lakes as they become scientists and sailors throughout the program. All Schoolship programs complement the Michigan Science Standards for grades 4-12.

Share with Local Businesses

Businesses can steward the Great Lakes by connecting students to ISEA. A Schoolship or ROV program, funded by a local business, introduces Great Lakes ecology into their community.

Ideas:

  • Encourage businesses to ask for a presentation from the class to expand our stewardship reach. Students can share what they learned and in the process, teach the business employees.
  • Ask a business about a water-related environmental issue they have to solve (e.g., invasive species on their property or run-off concerns). Suggest they connect with a local high school science teacher to help them find solutions, and have them fund a custom Schoolship experience.
  • Share some of the teacher resources (above) with a business so they can see how ISEA programs can meet teachers’ needs.
  • Encourage businesses to set aside a day for staff to volunteer with ISEA (e.g., special projects, spring and fall cleanups) or offer paid time off for volunteering with us.
  • Ask them to sign up for our online monthly newsletter through this link or on the bottom of our home page.
