Diving Deeper Schoolship Program

Class photo on the schooner

This program is for high school students who are ready to go deeper in their understanding of the Great Lakes. Students collaborate to answer research questions using professional limnology equipment and historical Schoolship data. Each student team focuses on different research topics and will thus gain competence in sampling procedures and proficiency in their area of study. Teams cement their understanding by sharing their knowledge with other teams. A stewardship discussion is held at the end of the program.

Morning Session:*  Arrive at 8:30 a.m. and return to shore at 12:30 p.m.
Afternoon Session:*  Arrive at 1:15 p.m. and return to shore at 5:15 p.m.

*Note:  Summer season programs have more flexibility in program timing than the spring and fall seasons. Please contact ISEA for summer program time options.

The Diving Deeper program sets teachers up to do further data analysis and report writing back in the classroom, but can also stand as its own experience. It is also flexible to accommodate the particular research questions or experiential learning your students want to explore. Contact us to get the details on how your students can design their own sail.

  • Students collect multiple samples and make comparisons between them.
  • Students analyze data and comparison to historical records.
  • Each group has dedicated time to participate in ship operations like navigating, piloting, and handing sails and lines.
