Women on the Water

Trade the shore for the water and step into the boots of a sailor. This is a call to the wild, a three-day immersion into the rhythmic life of a working tall ship.

Aboard the 105’ schooner Alliance, you aren’t just a passenger; you are part of the crew. From the moment we slip our lines at Discovery Pier, you’ll be woven into the ship’s spirit, mastering the timeless craft of sailing the Great Lakes, and learning about the science of the world’s greatest freshwater ecosystem. Together, we will navigate Grand Traverse Bay, where the horizon meets the water in a dance of deep blues and emerald greens.

This is an adventure-first expedition. You will haul lines, hoist the sails, and feel the power of the wind. Under the guidance of our seasoned sailors, you’ll learn the language of the rigging and the grit required to command a traditional vessel. Authentic schooner life means everyone plays a part in keeping the ship shipshape. As a member of the crew, you will participate in the daily chores that help the Alliance be prepared for every leg of our journey. You’ll collect scientific data, helping ISEA further our mission to protect the Great Lakes. Throughout your time onboard, you will contribute to vital Great Lakes health research and become a greater steward for the place we call home.

Join a new community of twelve like-minded individuals who care about the water as we work together to catch the breeze. Experience the raw beauty of the Great Lakes, from the golden glow of a sunrise over the bowsprit to the beautiful stillness of a night at anchor. Each day brings a new horizon. Help the Captain navigate our course, seeking out the best spots to drop our anchor for the night.

See Where You’d Be Spending Your Time!

While onboard Alliance, you will sleep in a berth, which is a type of fixed bed or bunk attached to the hull of the ship. Guests onboard will sleep in a large common area; there are no private sleeping arrangements. The common cabin also includes two heads (toilets, as you call them on land), and an approximately 15-foot ladder (or companionway) that brings you from the deck to this common cabin below deck. There are two levels of berths. Each is slightly smaller than the size of a twin bed, with small shelves for storage. Being on board a sailing vessel means getting the full experience, including the soothing waves rocking you to sleep!
