Prevention is the key to stop plastic pollution

8155755066_590714e6c4_oPlastic pollution is in the Great Lakes and we need to educate others about stopping it. Sherri Mason, a professor of chemistry at The State University of New York – Fredonia, spoke at the Freshwater Summit Conference on October 30 about her plastic pollution research in the Great Lakes (Inland Seas Education Association is helping her with this research).

At the conference, she mentioned prevention is the way to stop the plastic pollution because the microplastic pieces are too small to clean-up. If we were  to clean it up, we’d also kill the plankton, larvae, and plants with it. Since there is no single solution to reducing plastic pollution, we need to educate all parties about this problem. Help spread the word about plastic pollution in the Great Lakes by sharing this article, keeping abreast of the state laws and bills regarding microbeads, and reposting ISEA’s Facebook posts on microplastics.
