Teacher Information

The mission of ISEA's Great Lakes Schoolship Program is two-fold:

1. to encourage young people to pursue academic disciplines related to the Great Lakes, particularly the sciences, and;
2. to promote enhanced public undestanding and stewardship toward the Great Lakes and global freshwater.

Young people aboard the Schoolship become excited about science through their active participation in every aspect of the day's activities during the Great Lakes Schoolship Program. Through this inquiry-based active participation they begin to construct thier own understanding of the Great Lakes ecosystem.

From this understanding, and through the power of sail, we hope to inspire young people. If we can inspire our Schoolship students to develop a sense of commitment towards the Great Lakes, they will be more likely to become stewards of this precious international resource in the future.

A single Schoolship experience, however powerful and meaningful, can be made more effective if the students have developed intellectual mooring upon which to secure these new experiences. For this reason, we have developed a series of hands-on activities that introduce and build upon important concepts explored during the Schoolship Program. Many of these reinforce the message of our half-day program.
