YWIS Participant in the News

kateGaylord Herald Times Features YWIS Participant

Kate Roberts was featured in the Gaylord Herald Times on August 25, 2016. She was one of 10 girls who participated in the Young Women in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) 3-day program in the Straits of Mackinac in July. YWIS programs are three-day, two-night adventures on the 77′ schooner, Inland Seas. Participants are scientists throughout the trip. They choose a Great Lakes topic to research, collect and analyze samples, and present their findings. They also become crew members, hoisting sails, raising the anchor, steering the ship, cleaning the deck, taking night watch shifts, and working in the galley. In Kate’s words, “It wasn’t just science and it wasn’t just sailing — it was an all-encompassing experience which was really awesome.”

The Zonta Club of Gaylord and American Association of University Women Gaylord chapter awarded Roberts a Young Women in STEM scholarship to participate. Zonta Clubs from across the state sponsored 20 young women for the YWIS program during the 2016 season.
