Great Lakes Careers
Fishery Biologist
Fisheries research biologists study the biology of fish: habitat requirements, population, life histories, diseases, and forage base. Fisheries managers may work with fish hatcheries, study the effects of pollutants on fish, and cooperate with others to improve fish habitat. Some may work as aquaculturists and study the best ways of raising fish: nutrition requirements, genetic of fish stocks, and prevention of fish disease. Many fisheries biologists work for state or federal agencies like the U.S Fish & Wildlife Service or State Departments of Conservation or Natural Resources. Some are researchers at universities or work as consultants or staff with major corporations. Power companies have fishery biologists on staff. Companies engaged in aquaculture also hire fishery biologists.
